    Taking the Next Step

On April 27, 2008, more than 40 churches in San Diego County will participate in a county-wide Faith in Action emphasis. On that Sunday, many will replace a regular service with a community outreach event. Last November, New Seasons Church participated in their first Faith in Action weekend, where the congregation joined several volunteers from the community to pack care boxes for returning troops, deliver meals to families in need, and clean public areas.
As teams set out on Sunday morning to work in the surrounding neighborhood, Josh Dunn, a 14-year-old volunteer, was ready to help. As his team began cleaning the first area assigned to them, they came across an old mattress. Leaving the mattress behind for the pick-up crew, the group proceeded to their second stop. While the group picked up trash and raked tumbleweeds, Josh found a blanket. He decided not to put it in his trash bag and instead carried it to their final location. As he arrived, he then found a pillow. Josh found it all strange; first the mattress, then a blanket and now a pillow.
When the team returned to the first location, Josh saw a homeless man standing by the mattress. Josh approached the man, holding the blanket and pillow. “God told me to give these to you.” The man replied, “Now I have a place to rest.”
More than providing the man with basic necessities, the team later helped him find the most essential need: eternal life. On Sunday evening, New Seasons held a Celebration Service, a time when members gave testimony of what God had done through them and in their lives. Amongst the attendees was the man, who was now able to join in the celebration.
