Tutoring |
|
|
Why:
Research shows that if children aren’t achieving grade level standards by the third grade, they’re far more likely to get involved in crime, drugs or gang activity. The biggest struggle for most students is reading; nationwide, 85% of young adults in the juvenile justice system are functionally illiterate. (Information from www.begintoread.com)
In San Diego:
More than 150 public elementary schools have a majority of students who aren’t achieving grade level. Tutors are desperately needed!
Local Volunteers Will:
Partner with community organizations that are impacting children through effective, long-term tutoring programs. Churches will also reach out to the schools in their neighborhoods, developing partnerships based on this question: “How can we help you?”
Volunteers Will:
Depending on the season, volunteers will have the opportunity to work alongside churches and literacy organizations as they tutor children. (In some cases, a brief training session will be required). Volunteers visiting San Diego during the summer will work with local churches as they meet the needs of schools in their area, including improvement/clean-up projects and assembling care packages for teachers and students.
